On the 27th National Environment Day, held under the theme “Together for a Sustainable Local Product”, HE Dr. Al Dahak urged collaboration among various stakeholders from the public, private sectors, and the community to continue to protect the environment and conserve our resources. She also reiterated the importance of supporting local products and raising awareness about transforming our food systems to become more sustainable, resilient, and locally sourced.

On National Environment Day, the UAE renews its commitment to confronting the challenges facing our planet and reaffirms its determination to build on the legacy and environmental stewardship of our founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Achieving a sustainable food supply requires innovation, collaboration, and dialogue with crop and livestock farmers, as well as fisheries. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment is helping drive these conversations and is supporting individuals spearheading the development and sustainability of the nation’s local produce.

HE Dr. Al Dahak praised the work of these groups, saying, "On National Environment Day, let's enhance collaboration, and engage in meaningful dialogues with farmers, livestock farmers, and fishermen, who are the backbone of the security of food we have established in the UAE. We must eliminate obstacles, enabling them to contribute effectively to boosting our local products."

Her Excellency added: "From the food we consume to the products we purchase and the water we use, every choice influences our environment. While our food systems address humanity's fundamental needs, they also contribute to one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions."

HE Dr. Al Dahak urged all stakeholders, including public and governmental bodies, relevant organizations, and the community, to unite in championing local products in the UAE, empowering those leading us towards this goal.

This year’s theme will focus on engaging with local producers, and the community to shed light on the importance of bringing together all stakeholders and the community to increase domestic food production and consumption.

Sustainable local produce plays a crucial role in promoting community and environmental health. Opting for local products not only ensures sustainable access to quality and nutritious food for people in the UAE, but it also reduces emissions and actively contributes to the growth of local businesses and the community's economic prosperity.

This year’s National Environment Day builds on the success of COP28, held in the UAE last year, where food systems sat at the heart of negotiations and climate progress.

During COP28, over 159 Heads of State and Government, representing a combined population of over 6.2 billion people, endorsed the ‘COP28 UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action’. The Declaration recognizes the potential of agriculture and food systems to drive innovative responses to climate change, and ensure safe, sufficient, affordable, and nutritious food for all.

The nation’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategy was launched prior to the start of COP28. It set out a plan for how the country will build on the momentum created by its Third Update to the Second Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), moving from 40% emission reduction by 2030, to Net Zero by 2050.

MOCCAE considers it imperative that alongside the integration of innovation and technology into our food systems, the entire supply chain works collaboratively to ensure we produce, source, consume, and dispose of food sustainably.

National Environment Day activities beginning today will continue through to World Environment Day on June 5.

<a10:updated>2024-02-04T00:00:00+04:00</a10:updated>

Reviews UAE's efforts to promote sustainable biosecurity The National Committee of Biosecurity holds its first meeting for 2024

HE Dr. Al Dahak stated, "The UAE seeks to ensure sustainable biosecurity.
She also highlighted the UAE’s support for the WHO’s Global Strategy via initiatives like One Health and Pathway Veterinary Services (PVS) evaluation.

In past years, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has successfully developed a comprehensive legal framework in the Animal and Veterinary Sector, which has led to the development of an innovative and adaptable legislative system, as well as a standardized implementation of procedures across the country. In addition, tools and capabilities have been developed to support the veterinary system through the Biosecurity Early Warning System. This multi-sectoral and multi-level digital tool addresses animal health by sending alerts on legislative violations, as well as epidemiological and animal welfare concerns. It facilitates prompt responses from all concerned parties at the country level.

HE Dr. Al Dahak described discussions around legislation, sustainability, and regulation at the national dialogue as “crucial” and described enhancement of the veterinary sector as a “key priority” for the Ministry.

She commented: “We are here to collaborate for the ongoing development of the veterinary medicine sector and for the wider protection of our wildlife, and the enhancement of global biodiversity.

“We aim to build bridges of communication between academia, government, and the private sector. This entails identifying key challenges faced by the veterinary profession, refining a mutually agreed-upon veterinary roadmap, launching the regulatory and legislative frameworks needed for the veterinary profession.”

The delegation at the National Dialogue included Prof. Ghaleb Al Hadrami Al Breiki, Acting Vice Chancellor of United Arab Emirates University, experts from veterinary establishments, representatives of relevant international organizations and associations, and government agencies and authorities in the UAE.

The dialogue led to a series of development initiatives centered around the leadership of the veterinary sector. These include collaborations with the private and academic sectors to establish a national system for qualifying and training veterinary students. The aim is to ensure they receive comprehensive scientific and practical experiences. Additionally, there is a focus on creating a digital platform for veterinary facilities to enhance transparency, competitiveness, and ultimately contribute to improving the overall animal health system in the country.

A crucial part of the dialogue was HE Dr. Al Dahak’s meeting with students from the Veterinary Medicine program at United Arab Emirates University. In conversations, the students provided HE Dr. Al Dahak with valuable insight into their major and its contributions to academic knowledge creation and sharing in the field of veterinary medicine. By also learning about the students’ goals and aspirations, HE Dr. Al Dahak discussed how MOCCAE can best support the next generation of Veterinary Medical professionals in the UAE.

Last year, the Ministry endorsed the amended version of Law number 10 for 2002, which enhanced the investments and regulated the profession for local and government veterinarians.

The first National Dialogue focused on developing solutions to protect and enhance veterinary medicine, as well as create opportunities for further growth, innovation, and sustainability.

<a10:updated>2024-01-24T00:00:00+04:00</a10:updated>

HE ALMHEIRI HANDS OVER RESPONSIBILITIES TO NEWLY APPOINTED MINISTER OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND ENVIRONMENT HE DR. As Minister of Climate Change and Environment, HE Dr. Al Dahak will oversee and lead environmental initiatives in partnership with other government partners, the private sector, startups in relevant sectors, and all segments of the community, in an effort to achieve the UAE’s ambitious Net Zero 2050 Strategy, protect the country’s unique natural environment, accelerate the UAE’s climate action, grow the national agriculture and fishing sectors, promote the development of agricultural technologies, safeguard land ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and ensure national food security.

Her pioneering leadership will include focusing on boosting the economic value of environmental programs and promoting research and development programs to enhance food, and environmental security, and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

<a10:updated>2024-01-21T00:00:00+04:00</a10:updated>

UAE Farmers Council discusses initiatives to strengthen the sustainability of the agricultural sector

H.E.
Her Excellency said, “The transformation of the agricultural sector to make it more sustainable was a top priority for the UAE during the recent COP28 held in Dubai.
Her Excellency Almheiri said that one of the key goals of the UAE in the coming years is to make agricultural systems more sustainable and climate-smart, and that the Ministry will support farmers to enhance agricultural productivity and conserve natural resources.

Her Excellency underlined the significance of maintaining open channels of communication with farmers to address their requirements.
