MOEW Assures RAK Fisheries of crustaceans

Monday, 07 June 2010

Marine Research Center of the Ministry of Environment & Water (MOEW) had the necessary laboratory tests on samples of crustaceans found in Ras Al khaimah beaches. They were small shrimp like crustaceans ranging in size from half to 1 cm. Tests results proved that they were not shrimps, however, these species are considered as food for certain kinds of fish and other marine life.

H.E. Dr. Mariam Alshinasi the ministry Executive Director for technical affairs stated that the existence of crustaceans on RAK beaches has no relation with the Red Tide phenomenon.
On the other hand, the samples collected from Alhlyla beaches contained Sardine larvae. It is worth mentioning that the temperature and the salinity of water helped much to enrich waters with phytoplankton &zooplanktons.

The executive director added that the existence of crustaceans on beaches resulted from the marine currents and Ebb & Tide. It was noted the disappearance of crustaceans the day followed their appearance due to high tide which helped to drifting in the sea. The Executive director ensured the fishermen that it is a normal situation.

On his part Dr. Ibrahim Al Jamali director of Marine Research Center pointed out that the existence of crustaceans in sea waters is a contributing & supporting factor to grow and enrich fish storage. The Arabian Gulf – he added- is rich in marine life in terms of quantitative & qualitative diversity of marine organisms. Waters of the Arabian Gulf are characterized with high temperature & salinity in addition to sea currents as well as hydrographical properties, light intensity and the availability of suitable nutrients helped the diversity of marine life. This also helped the presence of diatoms phytoplankton during summer season & binaries whip during winter season.

Aljamali mentioned that the distribution of biomass of biological organisms of these species helped the increase of other biomasses and live stocks.

Micro – organisms play key role to enhance food chain in the Arabian Gulf and represent the main source of fish, larvae and other marine life such as crustaceans and molluscan which are considered an important nutrient source for people of the Arabian Gulf.

Aljamali pointed out the biological activities of these organisms can be divided into two phases during their life cycle. Some of these activities are harmful to planktons, crustaceans, molluscs, fishes, environment and even human beings such as phytoplankton that their flourishing may lead to the death of some marine life resulted from lack of dissolved Oxygen in water or clogging of their gills. Some of these activities are harmless and they constitute the basic components of food chain in the food pyramid of sea environment. Moreover, it acts for keeping the environmental balance of the ecological systems.
