On behalf of the Follow-up Committee of the Initiatives of the UAE President, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) awarded a contract for a landfill rehabilitation project in Umm Al Quwain to ETHPE Contracting. The leading UAE-based company provides sustainable public works, hydraulics and environmental solutions for the construction sector.
His Excellency Sultan Alwan Al Habsi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Regions Sector at MOCCAE, and Abdul Baqi Talif, Chairman of ETHPE Contracting, signed the contract in the presence of His Excellency Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment.
ETHPE Contracting will rehabilitate the landfill serving Umm Al Quwain as per the tender issued by the Follow-up Committee of the Initiatives of the UAE President, represented by MOCCAE. The scope of work includes site preparation, dredging and filling, as well as building a drying bed for industrial wastewater and a landfill cell for hazardous solid waste. The company must complete the project in two years and offer one-year maintenance warranty.
His Excellency Dr Al Zeyoudi said: “Integrated waste management aligns with the Ministry’s mandate to implement sustainable waste management systems across the UAE. To achieve our target of treating 75 percent of all waste, we are prioritizing holistic upgrades that improve the capacity and efficiency of our existing waste management facilities.”
He added: “Our landfills are under immense pressure to accommodate the growing amounts of waste generated due to the steady increase in population and industrial activity. Unless we address this issue, the waste management challenge will pose a significant risk to the environment and the community at large.”
