Ministry of Environment and Water holds series of workshops aimed at helping protect livestock and prevent spread of infectious animal diseases

Friday, 07 November 2014

In line with its commitment towards the promotion of food safety and sustainability of local food production and the move to increase awareness on how to prevent the proliferation of pests and infectious animal diseases, the Ministry of Environment and Water successfully held a series of workshops across the Western, Central, Eastern and Northern parts of the UAE. The sessions were aimed at helping in the protection of livestock and the prevention of diseases.

According to the Ministry, the workshops were held to make veterinarians from the local authorities and private sectors more aware of Federal Law No. 8 for the year 2013, which centres on the regulations covering the prevention of communicable and infectious animal diseases and the active roles that concerned government agencies and private institutions play in the move to control the spread of such diseases. Provisions of the law include the mandatory reporting of diseases; guidelines on dealing with suspected pathological; handling and transporting of sick animals; procedures for sterilization and disinfection of affected livestock areas and the sanitary disposal of dead animal remains.

His Excellency Engineer Saif Al-Shara, Assistant Undersecretary for Agricultural and Animal Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Water, said that the Ministry is keen in organizing these sessions as part of the move to strengthen communication ties between local authorities and privet sectors. The workshops are also aimed at further developing and regulating the livestock industry—keeping it right on track towards efforts in achieving sustainability and growth.

The workshops organized by the Ministry have been designed to serve as a strategic platform for participants and authorities to discuss key issues concerning the local livestock industry. The activity represents the MoEW’s continued commitment to enhance communication and cooperation with strategic partners in all fields, especially those working in the field of animal health in order to familiarize them with livestock-based activities.
