Ministry of Environment and Water shuts down quarry in Fujairah for violations

Sunday, 04 October 2015

H.E. Engineer Saif Mohammed Al-Shara, Assistant Undersecretary for External Audit sector, Ministry of Environment and Water, has announced the closure of a quarry in Fujairah for its failure to meet the regulatory requirements for operating, planning and implementing public works in the quarry sector. He reiterated the Ministry’s objective of ensuring that all facilities operating in the UAE meet their legal and regulatory obligations in terms of protecting public health and promoting environmental sustainability in accordance with UAE Vision 2021.

The Ministry discovered many violations inside the Fujairah facility during its inspection conducted as part of its function. Ministry officials reported excessive visual dust emission that affects the health of nearby residents. Another breach was the lack of proper covering for quarry feeder machine and transportation lines that could have prevented the dust emission.

H.E. Al Shara said:  “The Ministry’s Quality Assurance Division is conducting a series of scheduled and on-the-spot visits to quarry sites throughout the year to ensure that these facilities are following the federal environmental laws and regulations.”

He called on all facility operators to abide by the existing laws to ensure their continued operations. Prior to the inspections, the Ministry held a series of workshops on related laws and regulations for operators to ensure their understanding and commitment to the overall health of society.

The Ministry of Environment and Water closely coordinates with local authorities overseeing quarries and cement factories when conducting their field inspections.
