UAE Ministry of Environment and Water conduct special course to develop organic farming in UAE

The UAE Ministry of Environment and Water organized in its Headquarters in Dubai, a technical and specialized course to improve the role of agricultural guidance in developing organic farming on the federal level. The move is in line with the Ministry's objectives to share modern techniques and expertise with farmers, which will contribute in improving the local income and boost its contribution to food security.

The course was organized as part of the Ministry's keenness to provide secure and healthy food without harming the environment. It is also aligned with a series of efforts made by the Ministry to develop organic farming, as it has a tremendous economic and ecological significance. The course is part of an integrated program to train and develop the capabilities of agricultural engineers and advisors working in the Ministry along with local authorities concerned with organic farming and its field applications with an aim to transfer accurate information to the UAE farmers. The session aimed to familiarize the participants with national legislation regarding organic inputs and products and methods of applying them, transforming to organic production, methods of soil and pest management, and mechanism of obtaining the Emirati trademark (Organic).

There has been a remarkable improvement in the UAE’s local organic produce, as the areas certified for organic farming has reached 4000 hectare by the end of 2013. The country is currently producing over 67 species of organic products, including dates, cucumber, lettuce, tomatoes and paper, available in the market as per international standards.

Emirati organic products are distinguished by its national emblem (Organic). The course was attended by 50 participants, including the Ministry’s engineers and representatives from local authorities.
