The Coordinating Council of Municipal Affairs Discusses the Development of Safety Standards and Specifications for Residential Facilities

His Excellency Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, the Minister of Environment and Water, called on all municipalities and stakeholders to apply the disciplinary sanctions for violators of regulatory decisions regarding marine wealth and fisheries, according to the Council of Ministers Resolution 18 (2012).

This was during a the 8th meeting of the Coordinating Council of Municipal Affairs of the year 2012, chaired by H.E. Dr. Rashid Bin Fahad, held at Eastern Mangroves Hotel in Abu Dhabi last Thursday (September 27th, 2012), in the presence of Their Excellences Members of the Council, the CEOs and Directors of municipalities of the country.

   During the meeting, many issues were discussed that are related to municipal work in the country, such as the regulating the public health pest control, where His Excellency stressed -in this context- that all pest control facilities must correct their status in accordance with the resolution of the Council of Ministers within three months from its issuance. The Ministry of Environment and Water will have to issue the general framework while local authorities will direct the periodic control and inspection regulations on the operating companies in the field of public health pest control, to ensure compliance with the provisions of the resolution, and provide the ministry with the procedures and mechanisms for implementation and follow-up.

   In addition, the Department of Municipal Affairs - Abu Dhabi showed a presentation on its strategy of introducing local environment plants in landscaping projects, the exerted  efforts of the Department in this area, and the possibility of applying such a strategy in the other emirates.

   The meeting agenda included the development of standards and specifications of safety for residential facilities, given the repeated incidents of fire and the fall of children from windows and balconies, and the need to develop Safer fire extinguishing systems and windows protection systems for homes and residential towers, and a recommendation was made regarding the formation of a joint committee to study the issue and to develop the standards and the appropriate specifications.

   The meeting was attended by H.E. Majed Ali Al Mansouri, the Chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs in Abu Dhabi, H.E. Mr. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, H.E. Eng. Sultan Abdullah Al Mualla, Director General of Sharjah Municipality, H.E. Mohamed Saqr Al Asam, Director General of Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, H.E. Eng. Mohammed Saif Al Afkham, Director General of Fujairah Municipality, H.E. Yahya Al Reyaysa, Director General of the Ajman Department of Municipality and Planning, H.E. Sultan Alwan, Assistant Undersecretary for External Audit at the Ministry of Environment and Water, H.E. Mohamed Al Zaabi, Deputy Assistant Undersecretary for Environmental Affairs at the Ministry, and Engineer Abdullah Al Mualla, Director of the Coordination of Municipal Affairs Office at the Ministry.
