The marine life in the UAE has been a focus of interest for the government, and several legislations have been passed to protect the marine environment and boost its resources. These include federal law no. 23 (1999) regarding the exploitation, protection and development of marine resources, federal law no. 11 (2002) for the regulation of the international trade of endangered animals and plants and ministerial decree no. 500 (2014) regarding the regulation of the fishing and trade of sharks.
In addition, the UAE has joined several international agreements which aim to protect marine species and their habitats including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the international agreement for migratory species last May in which the UAE participated as one of the parties in the memorandum of understanding regarding sharks.
As part of its commitment to protect biodiversity, the country adopted a number of strategies and programs to protect various endangered marine species such as the National Strategy for Biodiversity.
