The Ministry of Environment and Water has stepped up its efforts to monitor and regulate the activities of cement companies operating in the UAE through stricter implementation of laws and regulations. This forms part of its initiative to promote environmental sustainability as well as protect and conserve the surrounding environment and health of nearby residents. The Ministry has also reminded local authorities to thoroughly check the facilities during their morning and evening inspections and visits.
The Ministry recently ordered a one-month closure of a cement facility in Khor Khuwair area in Ras Al Khaimah due to violations to Cabinet Resolution No.(24) of 2011 governing the activities of establishments in the cement industry, and the Ministerial Decree No.(137) of 2012 which contains guidelines regulating the operations of cement companies.
Ghanim Al Shamsi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary of External Audit at the Ministry of Environment and Water, said: “The decision to close down the facility came after we conducted our scheduled visits to cement facilities in Ras Al Khaimah. Through our inspections, we aim to assess the efficiency of the federal legislations governing cement companies and their facilities as part of our efforts to promote environmental sustainability in the country. Based on the report of our auditors and specialists, the facility committed several environmental violations that resulted in its closure.”
The Ministry of Environment and Water has been conducting scheduled visits in cooperation and coordination with local authorities to ensure the compliance of cement companies with laws and regulations. The Ministry emphasized that these visits play an important role in its strategic goals of protecting the environment and promoting sustainability in the country. These goals also serve as key elements in achieving the grand aspirations of the UAE Vision 2021 development agenda.
