The UAE Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW), in cooperation with the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (Du), has announced the launch of the Carbon Footprint App, during its participation at Gitex Technology Week 2014, which is taking place from October 12 to 16, 2014 at Dubai World Trade Center. The edutainment-based application is designed to encourage environment responsibility across all age groups by calculating consumption of power, water, transportation, waste and carbon emissions by simply entering relevant data by the user.
H.E. Abdul Rahim Al Hammadi, the Assistant Undersecretary for Support Services at MoEW, explained that the Carbon Footprint App aims to support the country’s smart transformation, which is part of the vision and directives of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The application, Al Hammadi continues, serves as a new educational step towards raising awareness on the importance of reducing carbon footprint in the country in line with Ministry’s strategy of educating and increasing awareness on the reduction of carbon footprints.
Al Hammadi further added that the App is part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to reduce carbon footprint in the country in support of the Ecological Footprint Initiative aimed at introducing the public to best environmental practices and monitor their consumption of natural resources and energy in order to boost environmental sustainability across the UAE.
From his side, Fahad Al Hassawi, Chief Commercial Officer, du said: “Sustainability is no longer an issue limited to the attentions of institutions and governments. Today, the wider community is conscious of their obligation towards the environment, regardless of age, gender or nationality. We are proud to be doubling our efforts with the Ministry of Environment and Water, to help them to harness innovation in support of its efforts to meet sustainability commitments. The importance of this app is not only to allow the public to monitor their consumption of electricity and water, and their emissions from transportation and waste disposal, but to contribute in raising the level of public awareness. Additionally, it will serve to encourage more individuals to adhere to environmental and social responsibilities, to ensure a greener future for generations to come.”
