UAE Ministry of Environment and Water conducts inspection of Dubai factories for fishing traps

The UAE Ministry of Environment and Water, in collaboration with the Dubai Municipality, conducted inspection campaigns on fishing trap factories in the emirate. The move came in response to the directives of the government on all federal legislations and regulations to achieve the nation’s prosperity and development by building a sustainable environment.

The Ministry surveyed the factories in coordination with the Federal Customs Authority, which controls the entry and forbids import of fishing traps that violate the provisions of Cabinet resolution no. (706) of 2013 on organizing, manufacturing, importing and using fishing traps. The campaign is part of the Ministry’s efforts to enhance the collaboration and integration between all concerned authorities in order to deliver the best eco-friendly practices to achieve sustainable development.

The inspection team comprising officials from the Ministry and the Dubai Municipality found nine factories in Dubai that were violating the provisions of Cabinet resolution no. (706) of 2013. The factories failed to adhere to fishing traps specifications, indicated in Article 2 thereof. The Dubai Municipality issued violation tickets to these factories, as per Cabinet Resolution no. (18) for 2012, on implementing penalties for violators of regulatory resolutions on living water resources and fish resources.

H.E Sultan Alwan, Assistant Undersecretary of External Auditing, UAE Ministry of Environment and Water, said: “The tickets were issued after specialists from the Ministry and Dubai Municipality carried out an inspection on the manufactured fishing traps, which violated the specifications of regulatory provisions. Local authorities and concerned bodies for fish resources must collaborate to relieve living marine resources with an aim to achieve sustainable fisheries resources by undertaking periodic control operations. It also requires the commitment of factories to implement and follow up laws, regulations, legislations and resolutions in reality.”

“The UAE Ministry of Environment and Water is keen to improve its integrated management to sustain water resources, as it is one of its most important objectives and an essential element to become a world leader, as a manifestation of the UAE Vision 2021".

The Ministry’s External Auditing sector works on assessing the efficiency of applying federal legislations to protect botanic, zoological and fish resources, according to the best international standards. It will help to preserve the marine environment and regulate the investment of natural resources to create a sustainable environment for future generations.
