South-west of Abu Dhabi in Al Gharbia region is the largest continuous spread of desert on earth, namely the Empty Quarter or Rub’ Al Khali, epitomised in the writings of explorer Wilfred Thesiger. On its edge is a cluster of villages that make up the Liwa Oasis. The area, once home to the Bani Yas tribe from where the rulers of the country descended, represents a rich history of traditional farming and Bedouin life. Modern-day explorers will find an interesting contrast of colours - the green of the date palms and farms against the red hues of the sand dunes. They can attend Liwa’s date festivals and discover its forts, built to protect the tribes and their lands. South of Liwa Oasis stands one of the largest dunes in the region. Known as Tel Moreeb, it towers above the rest at over 300 metres. It is a popular location for desert driving and desert sports.
