District of traditional souqs

Overview: 1- Traditional Deira Souqs history and overview: These souqs are located along the shore of the creek, where many wooden ships would land full of goods from Africa and the Indian subcontinent. This made it a shopping hub for merchant ships, trade, and it is an Arab style marketplace. One of the most significant traditional markets are Deira Souqs that date back to the year 1850 AD, these souqs have been restored and rehabilitated. One of the souqs is (The Dark Souq) which is a mixed market for many goods, and the vessels market or the metal market where people used to buy cookware like pots and trays. Another souq was called (Belshalat) and that is where men’s fabrics were sold. (Manazer) souq was the one for women’s needs and (Matareh) was the one for upholstery. Another market was dedicated for groceries, and one was for marine tools, a market for fabrics and mills, the perfume market, the Saffarine market where copper was polished in the past, the Dwayyat Market, and the Arasa market, in which the trade-off process took place before the souqs flourished, and it was a center to welcome the trade caravans. To take a glimpse of the enchanting past when you visit the narrow markets of spices (Dwayyat) near the old Dubai Municipality Museum, where you can find many spices and herbal medicine shops that have brought the past into the Al Ras area. This one is considered the oldest market in Dubai because it dates back to centuries ago. Spices are considered an essential component of the Emirati cuisine, where there are over 80 types of spices grown worldwide, and Dubai has become a hub to all spices and herbs coming from around the globe. The historical markets have been extended and renovated several times. These markets were the heart of all commercial transactions that took place in Dubai and they are renowned for that. The individuality of this city was translated in the mixing between residential and commercial buildings in urban relationships where the buildings interacted with several architectural elements, some Barjeels (wind towers) stucco works and various forms of architectural voids/spaces. The market district interacts with the creek and the walls of the old city which represents a civil society. The markets had 7 gates that open only in daytime and are closed at night. 2- Bur Dubai Markets, History and Overview: Bur Dubai Souqs are considered one of the oldest and most prominent markets in Dubai, built in the early 19th century. The market was expanded several times, it is characterized by wind towers. The strategic location of this market that connects it to the creek gives it prominence. The most important markets in Bur Dubai are: the big Souq, the Barajeel souq, Sardana souq, the Twasheen Souq, the clothing Souq, the gold Souq, the Fish souq.
